The 2020 Bastide de Margüi "1784" Rouge delivers on its harmony of blending Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon with exceptional concentration and depth of flavor. The Syrah leads with savory elements of licorice, roasted coffee, dried sage & lavender. The addition of Cabernet Sauvignon is a welcome choice in supplementing the savory elements with dark berry, cedar, plum, and black cherry. Rich aromatics of pipe tobacco, dried plum, espresso and dark cocoa powder, this wine wields power immediately out of the bottle. Savory notes of beef jerky, warm cedar, and cigar further propel the ripe fruit on the nose. On the palate black cherry, prunes, and redwood bark captivate the senses. Structurally, this wine is a piece of art in how the rich tannins of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot compliment the French oak aging with such grace. This allows the wine to be reimagined in accordance to the regional landscape and lesser known grape varieties which shape the land's identity. The 2019 Pristinvm is a crafted blend of Ciliegiolo, Sanforte, Pugnitello, and Foglia Tonda. Ciliegiolo is often found in the blends of Chianti and takes its name from the Italian word for "cherry". When reimagined on the slopes of Umbria, this variety is quickly being championed as a serious contender, and a new favorite to our palates. High-toned red raspberry, hibiscus, and hints of sundried tomato leap from the glass. Lively, yet rich this blend shows refreshing finesse with its spritely acidity lending way to concentration as a result of old world soils.
